“Residents from rural communities in the Kyle of Sutherland finally set to receive superfast broadband.
On Thursday 26th April, a public meeting was held at Bonar Bridge Community Hallby the Kyle of Sutherland Development Trust to inform people how they can benefit from a new Superfast Broadband Service that has just arrived in the area.
Around 40 people attended the event to find out more about the service which will be provided by Edderton based company Highland Wireless.
Helen Houston, Development Manager at the Trust said, “In 2015 Kyle of Sutherland Development Trust worked with Community Broadband Scotland to try and bring a community-owned broadband service to the area but due to changes in funding streams and Government Broadband strategy it wasn’t possible for the Trust to take that initial project forward. Recently the opportunity to work in partnership with Highland Wireless came about, and thanks to a grant from the SSE Beatrice Fund, the Trust will be leasing the equipment to Highland Wireless who will be delivering and managing the service across the area. Although people have to pay for this service – they may be eligible to submit a ‘BDUK’ Government Grant Voucher application to assist them with the installation costs.”
Cameron Warren, from Highland Wireless, added, “We have been working for a number of months to secure transmission sites, which can provide best coverage across the Kyle of Sutherland. The local landowners have been very co-operative in helping us secure these transmission sites. Residents in the coverage areas will now be able to enjoy superfast reliable broadband. This will ensure that people are able to make the most of online services whether this be for business or residential use!”
